New European Standard for spectators with special needs

The CEN (European Standards) Secretariat recently confirmed that the Technical Report: CEN/TR 15913:2009 Layout criteria for viewing area for spectators with special needs (which will be available in English, French and German) had been approved following a vote of all 30 member nations.

The report, which is based on the FLA's "Accessible Stadia" guide, should be published by BSI in the forthcoming months and makes strong recommendations for the location and numbers of spaces for wheelchair users, for ambulant disabled spectators and specifically for the incorporation of "super risers", to ensure that spectators in wheelchairs should have a clear view of the whole activity area at all times, especially when seated spectators directly or diagonally in front stand up.

CAFE (Centre for Access to Football in Europe) has written an Introduction Note 1 to CEN/TR 15913 “Spectator facilities – Layout criteria for spectators with special needs” that summarises the most important points from the CEN Report, available for download from their website link http://cafefootball.eu/2009/10/15/feature/breakthrough_for_disabled_football_supporters.html
